There are many reasons people may want to convert their loft into a useable space. One reason for this is that they need to have a loft office, which they can use for working from home.  This has become increasingly evident during the covid-19 pandemic.

Of course, having a loft conversion that functions as an office is incredibly useful when you need a space to work from, but what if you need it to have an entirely different use? Sometimes you need to transform your working space into a guest bedroom, particularly if you have a friend or family member coming to stay.

To help you, we have put together our top tips on converting a loft conversion office into a guest annexe.

Put the desk under the window

If you still want your guest bedroom in your loft to function as an office when you do not have people to stay with, you will need to make sure that you have a desk to work at. However, you want to make sure that this is not the focal part of the room. A great place to put it is in front of a window.

Not only will this keep it “out of the way” as such, but it will also help you work in the natural light and focus better when you are in that space.

Separate the areas as best as you can

If you are blessed with a larger loft conversion, then you may want to consider separating the space between your guest annexe and your home office completely. We don’t mean that you need to add a wall, but what we do mean is that you should have a physical separator between the two parts of the space.

This could be a larger piece of furniture, such as wardrobes or a sofa, or even a specially designed room divider if you think you can add this to the space.

Have multi-purpose furniture

If your loft conversion is not that big, you may find it hard to have separate zones. So, if this is a problem, you can always invest in multi-purpose furniture instead. Let the desk be a space that could also be home to a TV as well as a laptop, or perhaps invest in an office chair that is comfortable enough to encourage your guests to sit in it too. If space is tight in your loft conversion, then why not have a sofa bed that can be used for overnight guests.

Never scrimp on storage

One thing that you always need to ensure that you have in your guest annexe is storage. It might not be the most exciting thing to add in, but it keeps the space organised, which means that you don’t have to worry about it getting messy.

This is especially important if you are keeping your loft conversion as dual purpose and don’t want to worry about your guests being faced with all your work when they are trying to relax.

No matter what you decide to do with your loft conversion, one thing is for sure; it will prove to be a functional space that will open up your home and give you all the room you need for you and your family to live.
